I once saw this movie, I forget the name now, where this big huge and muscular man, puts meat, vegetables, fruit, milk, some powders into a blender. He then blitzes the whole thing and then proceeds to drink it. I always thought that that was what a smoothie was and swore never to drink anything like it. I mean can you even imagine drinking something like that. This green smoothie was the first smoothie I ever made. It was a bit hard to make and it used way too many things. I can’t make something complicated like that everyday. Since then I’ve gotten better and experimented a bit and came up with these 3 smoothies for clear skin.
So we’re going to keep things very simple. All these smoothies contain exactly 4 ingredients. However, if you want to experiment, please feel free to do so. However, I have to say that the combination mentioned is really the tastiest and nutrient dense for your skin.
How To Make The Smoothies
I use a NutriBullet to make my smoothies. But any basic blender works just fine. You do not need expensive blenders. I got my NutriBullet in the Boxing Day Sale when it was heavily discounted. Before that I used my basic Phillips Blender to make my smoothies.
Do not ever keep smoothies for longer than 1-2 hours after making them. They are best made and had fresh. To make things quicker you can pack the solid ingredients required for one smoothie like spinach, lemon, banana blueberries into a ziploc bag and store it in the fridge or freezer for the whole week. This way you can just add the ingredients to the blender and add the liquid when you are ready to make it.
All the quantities mentioned make enough for one serving.
Double, triple the ingredients for additional servings.
Green Smoothies For Clear Skin
This is one of the best smoothies for acne prone skin, hands down. It tastes refreshing and the combination of ginger and lemon gives it a very fresh taste. There are many green smoothies for clear skin out there and they’re all good. But this recipe keeps things simple and the taste factor high.
The spinach in the smoothie is full of Vitamin A and Vitamin C both of which help in healing your skin. I believe that eating green leafy vegetables helps clearing your skin of acne. Chlorophyll in the spinach helps with hormonal acne. Spinach contains loads of antioxidants which are great for your skin. People with acne are generally lacking in antioxidants.
Coconut water contains antioxidants and minerals which are good for you. Lemon is a great source of Vitamin C which helps with healing acne and scars. Ginger is anti-inflammatory and helps heal acne and reduce inflammation. That redness and swelling you see when you have acne is inflammation. Drinking this smoothie continuously for 2 weeks will help reduce your acne.
If you have cystic acne or acne that won’t heal, this is the smoothie to have first. Leave the other 2 smoothies below for when your skin has cleared up. This is one of the best smoothies for clear skin. Trust me, it actually works when had everyday for about 2-3 weeks. Of course do remember to avoid excess sugar in your diet.
Also if you’ve been cheating on your diet and want to keep acne at bay, this works. But it won’t work if you keep cheating all the time!!! Sugar and dairy are not great for your skin and it’s better you avoid them.
Ingredients
- 1 cup loosely packed spinach leaves
- 1 cup coconut water
- Juice of 1/2 lime / lemon
- 1/2 inch fresh ginger
Method
Put all the above ingredients in a blender and blend for 30-45 seconds.
Variation : You can replace the spinach with kale or any other green leafy vegetable. Add mint if you feel your acne is hormonal. Mint helps balance your hormones.
Blueberry Banana Smoothie
When you have acne, the more antioxidants your diet contains, the better it is for you. Antioxidants will help your skin heal. All berries are full of antioxidants and low in sugar. This smoothie can be easily made for breakfast. What’s better than starting your day with a burst of skin friendly antioxidants. We going to avoid adding sugar and add half a ripe banana instead for a bit of sweetness.
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup blueberries ( fresh or frozen )
- 1/2 ripe banana
- 1 cup almond or coconut milk
- 1/2 teaspoon chia seeds
Method
Add the blueberries to the blender. Chop the banana roughly and add along with the blueberries. Now add the coconut milk or almond milk and the chia seeds. Blend for about 30 seconds.
Variation : You can replace the blueberries with strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, cherries or a mix of them.
Chocolate Avocado Smoothie
I have saved the best one for last. This is a really very delicious smoothie. Nigella Lawson once described avocado as moisturising your skin from the inside. Avocado is full of healthy fats, although is does not contain much omega 3 fatty acids. This smoothie feels more like an ice cream shake than it does a smoothie. This is a great smoothie to have for breakfast or after a workout. The fat in the avocado keeps you full for a very long time.
Ingredients
- 1/4 ripe avocado
- 1 cup almond or coconut milk
- 2 teaspoons cocoa powder
- 1 tablespoon honey, maple syrup or brown sugar
Method
Add all the above ingredients to a blender and process till smooth.
As I mentioned earlier the green smoothie is the one to have if you are struggling with acne currently. If you acne is healing and getting better everyday try the blueberry banana smoothie or the avocado smoothie to bring a glow to your face.
If you have any questions or have tried any of the smoothies for clear skin, do leave me a comment and let me know what you think. I love hearing from you. 🙂
