A Green Smoothie Recipe for Great Skin

About 10-12 years back I was a great fan of the Oprah Winfrey show. It was from her show that I was then introduced to Dr Oz. I loved the way he spoke and the way he broke things down so that people like us could understand them. I then started watching his show. Now Dr Oz is a big advocate of healthy living and eating. On one of his shows, he had a nutritionist, called Dr Rovenia Brock. He asked the audience to guess how old she was. The audience guess ranged from 29-35. In reality, Dr Rovenia was 56 years old!!!!

This was a green smoothie recipe that she made on the show. Now, anything a woman who looks so young eats is very interesting. To top it all she had fantastic skin. She called this the Fountain of Youth shake. I got all the things I needed and made this the very next day.

Within a week my skin was brighter, my scars less visible and less red. At that time I had still not figured out that my acne was being caused by sugar, but this drink did make my acne heal faster.

Here is the recipe.

Green Smoothie Recipe (by Dr Rovenia Brock)
  • 1 cup coconut water
  • One teaspoon wheatgrass powder
  • 2 handfuls spinach or one handful any green leafy vegetable like mint, parsley
  • 2-3 inch pieces of pineapple
  • Juice of one lemon
  • Half a green apple
  • One inch piece of ginger

Blend all the above and drink.

The above was the original recipe. However, due to the fact that I could not get pineapple too often, I often skipped it and the apple too. However feel free to use kiwi, strawberries (or any berry) instead of pineapple and apple. Sometimes I just used coconut water, wheatgrass, lemon and ginger and still had good results.

Try it and let me know how it works out for you.

Does Drinking Water help Clear Up Acne?

How many times has someone looked at your acne and told you “Drink a lot of water”? It’s as if somehow water is the one thing you have completely overlooked in your quest for clear skin. I’ve had my fair share, well make that a big share, of people, tell me this, including the last dermatologist I saw. Besides being annoying, I knew it was not true as I have always been a water drinker. I drink up to 9-10 glasses of water a day. I have always drunk a lot of water, but still developed and had acne through my teens, twenties and my thirties.

Water makes up 55 – 65% of our bodies. This means that more than half of our bodies are water. So water is a very important component of our daily lives. To be able to function well, the cells and every organ of the body needs water. Water helps carry nutrients throughout the body. It helps regulate body temperature and lubricate the joints. Water is lost from the body during the day so we need to drink water to replenish it so that the body is able to function normally.

So, does water help clear acne? The answer is no. Telling someone who has acne to drink a lot of water is like telling someone to finish a 200 piece puzzle but only giving them 100 of the pieces as the other hundred have been misplaced. Or like giving them only a portion of the recipe for chocolate cake.

Let’s get something straight. Water is still needed to keep your skin hydrated, healthy and help it heal. But that being said drinking a lot of water alone will not help clear your skin. Water is only a piece of the puzzle. If you are battling adult acne for 2 years or more, it’s unlikely that your skin will clear by drinking water alone. You need to look at your diet, your stress levels and your overall health. However, drinking water will bring down the redness in your face considerably

Yes, we all know that one annoying person who hardly drinks water eats junk food and has clear skin. They have their genes to thank for it. If you have acne and do the same your body will react very differently. In fact, all our bodies react differently. So in addition to drinking more than 2 litres of water a day look at improving your diet and lifestyle.
