Turmeric Face Mask for Clear And Glowing Skin

Before I start telling you about how you can use a turmeric face mask let me tell you a little bit about how I first got introduced to it. Turmeric, also known as Haldi, has been used for centuries in India both as a food and as a medicine.

My Mum is from a small and quaint village called Aldona in North Goa. I spent a lot of my childhood in this village. When the month of April and May came along they would be a lot of activity in each household. You see once the rain started it would be difficult to get fish as fishermen did not go out to sea in stormy weather. It would be just as hard to go out to get groceries. So the pantry would be stocked with enough rice, sugar, spice powders and whatever else was needed for the next 4-5 months.

Pickles and papads ( savoury snacks to go with meals) would be made and the hot May sun would be made use of to dehydrate them well, so that they would last the next 4-5 months.

One of the main tasks taken up during this time was the making of spice powders. You see at the time spice powders were not freely available like they are in packets today. You had to make your own spice powders using whole spices. Buy whole red chillies, turmeric roots and whatever other whole spice you needed and get them home to clean them first.

So every May red chillies, turmeric roots, coriander seeds were cleaned, dried in the sun and then taken in bags to the mill in the closest town to be ground. The closest town to us was Mapusa.

You had to keep your bag with the whole spices in a queue. Imagine a queue not of people but with cloth bags in various colors. If you lived really far from the mill you could request the mill owner to grind your bag of spices first, using the excuse that if you missed the 8:30PM bus you’d be stranded in the market!
